Roppongi- Temples and Shrines

Zojo-ji
One of the Shogun family of the Tokugawa temples and could have been used as a fortress. The main gate is the only part of the building that is really old, the rest was rebuilt in the 1970s.
Today it nestles at the foot of Tokyo Tower.

Zenpukuji Temple

It is said that this temple was founded by the famous  Buddhist priest Kukai (also known as Kobo-Daishi). A well that is said to have sprung up where Kukai poked his cane and a 700 year old gingko tree that sprouted from a cane that Shinran (Buddhist priest) dug into the ground can be found in the premises. The tomb of Fukuzawa Yukichi, founder of Keio Gijuku (now Keio University) is in the Zenpukuji premises as well. The temple grounds here are known to have housed the first American legation.
