Himeji

Situated at the north-eastern end of the San-yo coast, Shirasagi-jo dominates this otherwise mainly industrial city. Only 15 minutes from the shinkansen station, it remains one of the few medieval castles still standing in Japan to this day. Its white walls and beautiful silhouette were state-of-the-art in its day and it is a must-see for any visitor to Chuguku.

The evocative Himeji Castle - Shirasagi-jo

Hyogo Prefecture History Museum, itself a fine building standing within the walls of the castle will provide a definitive history of the castle itself as well as displays of other castles around the world. Again - well worth a visit.

A large 12th Century complex of temples known as Shoshazan Enkyoji contain the oldest Kamakura-period (14th Century) structure remaining in Japan today - the Yakushido.
