The Yakuza

The origins of Yakuza is thought to date from around 1600 when rogue gangs of unemployed samurai would disguise themselves in order to terrorise local people for their own pleasure.

Today their name is synonymous with tattoos, yubitsume (the act of cutting of a finger by way of apology to the leader) and all manner of racketeering such as prostitution, gambling and extortion.

Osaka is the centre of the modern yakuza and many of the country?s largest crime syndicates.Although there is an estmated 150,000 gang members across Japan, the Yamaguchi-gumi is Japan?s largest and operate out of Osaka.

Conspicuous by their identifying marks and large, American cars, they can often be seen cruising the seedier parts such as Shin-Sekai.

Once respected as a traditional artform, tattoos are now considered anti-social and an emblem of Yakuza culture
