Religion in Japan

Shinto , Buddhism, Confucianism and even Christianity all have a role in contemporary Japanese life.

Many Japanese will incorporate rituals from at least two of the above into their life, however the two major Japanese religions remain Shinto and Buddhism which have co-existed in relative harmony for centuries.

However you only need visit Tokyo at Christmas or witness a Japanese wedding to see how elements of Christian ritual have made their mark on Japan.

The Japanese have always been open to the idea of adapting their customs and incorporating aspects of other religions which suit - a concept can often seem very alien to westerners.
